closing ceremony
Ceremony which closes the Olympic Games. The ceremony takes place in the Olympic stadium on the last day of the competitions of the Games of the Olympiad and of the Olympic Winter Games and is held in accordance with the protocol decided by the IOC. It should reflect and portray the humanistic principles of Olympism and contribute to the spread of these ideals. (See Olympic Charter Rules 56, 57)

opening ceremony
Ceremony which opens the Olympic Games. The ceremony takes place in the Olympic stadium not earlier than one day before the competitions of the Games of the Olympiad and of the Olympic Winter Games. The ceremony is held in accordance with the protocol decided by the IOC. It should reflect and portray the humanistic principles of Olympism and contribute to the spread of these ideals.
